Surf City Cabins - Costa Rica

October 31, 2003

by Kris Garrison

After spotting a small ad for Monolithic Domes in Popular Mechanics, Geoffrey Birtz of Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica contacted Monolithic hoping to learn more about building a dome home, but decided first to open a motel using EcoShell technology.

Construction on the first three of the projected fourteen cabins are underway and will be rentable in December, 2003.

Surf City will be located in front of Playa Cocles - a small villiage on the Caribbean coast just south of Puerto Viejo. It is a non-commercial tourist spot which receives a lot of traffic, but mostly backpackers or former backpackers. Since there are no hotel or restaurant chains in the area, Birtz considered his motel, Surf City, a needed asset for visitors.

Each cabin at Surf City will include a kitchenette, a full bath and two queen beds. Birtz plans to have the project complete in 2005. Birtz is also planning and designing his own Monolithic Dome home at this time.
