Monolithic Dome School in Florida

February 21, 2007

Monolithic Domes make a lot of sense in Florida, which has been battered by its share of severe hurricanes. The Children’s Reading Center, Inc., a charter school in Palatka, Florida, will soon become the second school in the state to shelter its students in the safety of Monolithic Dome buildings. The first of five Airforms went up on Tuesday, February 20th, and members of the news media from the surrounding area were on hand to witness the event. Both the Gainesville Sun and the Florida Times-Union assigned reporters to cover the inflation.

Deirdre Conner, a reporter for the Times-Union described it as an experiment in architecture.

Also covering the event was Karen Voyles of the Gainesville Sun, which headlined the story “A school’s big, big balloon.”

The Children’s Reading Center joins one other Monolithic Dome school in Florida: Bishop Nevins Academy in Sarasota.
