Proposed Watertown Dome is Making Headlines in New York

by Carol Lanham
April 30, 2007

A proposed 5,000-seat Monolithic Dome convention center has been making headlines in Watertown, New York over the last several weeks. Both the Watertown Daily News and the local ABC-affiliate, Newswatch 50, have been reporting on plans for a dome that would host sporting events, concerts, and other functions, while also doubling as a community emergency shelter. In one article, town Supervisor Joel Barlett was quoted as saying, “Looking at the costs, dollar for dollar, it’s a no-brainer to utilize a building of this type.” Both Mr. Bartlett and Watertown’s former fire chief, Charles Dillon, visited the Monolithic Dome Institute in Italy, Texas in February to learn more about advantages that domes have to offer. Officials are now reportedly trying to line up financing as well as a site for the proposed convention center.
