Chainshell Coating
This coating is called a chainshell coating. It is created by laying
chain link fencing over the dome and using it as the reinforcement for a
coating of concrete. The chain-link fence provides just enough
reinforcing to prevent any gross movement of the exterior concrete. It
is colored with a H&C Concrete Stain (a siliconized acrylic stain). This
method of covering the Airform is extremely effective and durable. We
recommend using standard stuccoing application rules when using this
method.
With this particular dome, the concrete was sprayed in one day.
We did not allow enough curing time between coats, therefore there was
significant cracking. When the cracking occurs and with exposure to
weather such as rain, dew and moisture, some of the ingredients
naturally leech out causing a stain on the surface of the coating. A coat of paint would be sufficient to spruce up the building.
