The Digital Thermostat

June 7, 2004

by David B. South

We have lived in our Monolithic Dome (Charca Casa) for seven years. Recently I realized how unhappy I was with the temperature control in our home. The home felt too warm at times and too cold at other times. The problem was the thermostat. Since Monolithic Domes hold interior temperatures so evenly, a conventional thermostat, which often has a range of 4 degrees or more, will wait too long to turn on the system and then wait too long to turn it back off. In a conventional house this isn't a big deal, but in a Monolithic Dome it presents a problem.

One thing that is extremly helpful in both conventional and Monolithic Dome homes is to run the furnace fan continuously. An old Lennox dealer taught me the trick and it has been proved to me over and over again to be right. Doing so will save you lots of money and your home will stay at a more even temperature.

Installing a twenty dollar digital thermostat (available at your local home improvement store) in Charca Casa has made a huge difference in our home's comfort level. A digital thermostat is accurate within one degree in a Monolithic Dome and two to three degrees in a conventional home.

Generally, a thermostat can be changed by a home owner after carefully reading the instructions.
